Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison (Legacy Edition)
May 17th, 2012At Folsom Prison is a live album and 27th overall album by Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records in May 1968. Since his 1955 song “Folsom Prison Blues”, Cash had been interested in performing at a prison. His idea was put on hold until 1967, when personnel changes at Columbia Records put Bob Johnston in charge of producing Cash’s material. Cash had recently controlled his drug abuse problems, and was looking to turn his career around after several years of limited commercial success. Backed with June Carter, whom he married later that year; Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three, Cash performed two shows at Folsom State Prison in California on January 13, 1968. The resulting album consisted of 15 tracks from the first show and two tracks from the second.
Despite little initial investment by Columbia, the album was a hit in the United States, reaching number one on the country charts and the top 15 of the national album chart. The lead single from the album, a live version of “Folsom Prison Blues”, was a top 40 hit, Cash’s first since 1964′s “Understand Your Man”. At Folsom Prison received good reviews upon its release and the ensuing popularity revitalized Cash’s career, leading to the release of a second prison album, At San Quentin. The album was re-released with additional tracks in 1999 and as a three-disc set in 2008. It was certified Gold on October 30, 1968, Platinum and 2x Platinum on November 21, 1986 and 3x Platinum on March 27, 2003 by the R.I.A.A.
Lucia di Lammermoor
May 17th, 2012Lucia di Lammermoor is a dramma tragico (tragic opera) in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian language libretto loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott’s historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor.
Donizetti wrote Lucia di Lammermoor in 1835, a time when several factors led to the height of his reputation as a composer of opera. Gioachino Rossini had recently retired and Vincenzo Bellini had died shortly before the premier of Lucia leaving Donizetti as “the sole reigning genius of Italian opera”.
Not only were conditions ripe for Donizetti’s success as a composer, but there was also a European interest in the history and culture of Scotland. The perceived romance of its violent wars and feuds, as well as its folklore and mythology, intrigued 19th century readers and audiences.
The story concerns the emotionally fragile Lucy Ashton (Lucia) who is caught in a feud between her own family and that of the Ravenswoods. The setting is the Lammermuir Hills of Scotland (Lammermoor) in the 17th century.

Mark B & Blade – The Unknown
May 16th, 2012Producer Mark B and MC Blade hail from South London, England. Their debut, The Unknown is a concept album (without arty pretensions) aiming to celebrate home-grown hip-hop.
Conceived as a call to arms, Mark B and Blade’s collaboration deserve plaudits outside US comparison. Alongside, Big Dada’s Gamma they have mounted a rap attack on hip-hop’s dumbed-down status quo with an album that is lyrically and sonically superb. Although the subject matter may be monotonous for most (the under-appreciation of UK hip-hop), the delivery certainly is not.
Though elderly (in UK hip-hop terms), Blade’s baritone breath control is timeless. He rhymes with a furrowed brow straight across battle-scarred lines, assaulting conformists on “From The Wordlab” or criticising the music industry’s predilection for fads on “Ya Don’t See The Signs”. The ever-prolific Mark B profits from eccentricity; for him all music from Polish folk music to Elmer Bernstein-style brass is relevant. His desire to search and utilise the ultimate but strangest breaks marks him out as an innovative talent who can produce world-class state of the art hip-hop.

The Mighty Foo – Foo Fighters
May 7th, 2012Dave Grohl joined the grunge group Nirvana as its drummer. During tours, he took a guitar with him and wrote some small songs. Grohl held back these songs from the rest of the band; he said in 1997, “I was in awe of frontman Kurt Cobain’s songs, and intimidated. I thought it was best that I keep my songs to myself.”
Grohl occasionally booked studio time to record demos and covers of songs he liked and even issued a cassette of some of those songs called Pocketwatch under the pseudonym “Late!” in 1992.
Frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home on April 8, 1994, and Nirvana subsequently disbanded. Grohl received offers to work with various artists; he almost accepted a permanent position as drummer in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Ultimately Grohl declined and instead entered Robert Lang Studios in October 1994 to record fifteen of the forty songs he had written.
With the exception of a guitar part on “X-Static,” played by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs, Grohl played every instrument and sang every vocal on the tracks.[7] “I was supposed to just join another band and be a drummer the rest of my life,” Grohl later said. “I thought that I would rather do what no one expected me to do. I enjoy writing music and I enjoy trying to sing, and there’s nothing anyone can really do to discourage me.” Grohl completed an album’s worth of material in five days and handed out cassette copies of the sessions to his friends for feedback.
Grohl hoped to keep his anonymity and release the recordings in a limited run under the title “Foo Fighters”, taken from the World War II term “foo fighter”, used to refer to unidentified flying objects.
However, the demo tape circulated in the music industry, creating interest among record labels.
Grohl formed a band to support the album. Initially, he talked to former Nirvana band mate Krist Novoselic about joining the group, but both decided against it. “For Krist and I, it would have felt really natural and really great”, Grohl explained. “But for everyone else, it would have been weird, and it would have left me in a really bad position. Then I really would have been under the microscope.”
Having heard about the disbanding of Seattle-based rock band Sunny Day Real Estate, Grohl drafted the group’s bass player, Nate Mendel, and drummer, William Goldsmith. Grohl asked Pat Smear, who served as a touring guitarist for Nirvana after the release of its 1993 album, In Utero, to join as the group’s second guitarist. Grohl ultimately licensed the album to Capitol Records, releasing it on his new record label, Roswell Records.
Foo Fighters made their live public debut on February 23, 1995 at the Jambalaya Club in Arcata, California and then March 3 at The Satyricon in Portland. They followed that with a show at the Velvet Elvis in Seattle on March 4. The March 3 show had been part of a benefit gig to aid the finances of the investigation into the rape and murder of The Gits singer Mia Zapata. Grohl refused to do interviews or tour large venues to promote the album.
Foo Fighters undertook their first major tour in the spring of 1995, opening for Mike Watt. The band’s first single, “This Is a Call”, was released in June 1995, and its debut album Foo Fighters was released the next month. “I’ll Stick Around”, “For All The Cows”, and “Big Me” were released as subsequent singles. The band spent the following months on tour, including their first appearance at the Reading Festival in England in August.
Bob Marley & The Wailers, Catch a Fire
May 6th, 2012Catch a Fire is the major-label-debut album for Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley & The Wailers, released on Island Records on 13 April 1973. Although unsuccessful, the album’s supporting concert tour throughout England and the United States helped establish the band as international stars.
Catch a Fire peaked at number 171 and number 51 on Billboard’s 200 and Black Albums charts, respectively. The album has received critical acclaim, including being listed at number 123 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, the second highest placement of the five Bob Marley albums on the list, after the posthumous compilation album Legend. It is also regarded as one of the top reggae albums of all time.
Mansun, Kleptomania 3CD Box Set
May 6th, 2012Kleptomania and other releases (2004-present)
With news of the split being confirmed and with the knowledge that most of the fourth album, which was set to be self titled, had already been recorded, an online petition was set up by fans to persuade Parlophone to release the material. The tracks intended for the album were then released in September 2004, along with the non-album singles and a selection of B-sides (compiled by Draper from a top 20 voted for by fans on the band’s official website) and rarities in a 3 CD box set entitled Kleptomania.[56] Draper later claimed that after Parlophone contacted him to ask whether he wanted to be involved in putting together the album sessions for release, he tried to reform the band to properly finish it but no one else was interested. In the press release for the album, Draper also claimed that when recording the new album, none of their hearts were in it, but in an interview in 2008 went on to blame Chad for the split, stating that the guitarist “wasn’t happy with the working method of writing and recording, but didn’t want to implement his own writing and recording method so we simply had to go home and end the band”.
Pearl Jam Vs.
May 6th, 2012Vs. is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on September 19, 1993 “ref”. through Epic Records. After a relentless touring schedule in support of its debut album, Ten (1991), Pearl Jam headed into the studio in early 1993 facing the challenge of following up the commercial success of its debut. The resulting album, Vs., featured a rawer and more aggressive sound compared with the band’s previous release. It was the band’s first collaboration with producer Brendan O’Brien.
Pearl Jam decided to scale back its commercial efforts for Vs., including declining to produce music videos for any of the album’s singles. Upon its release, Vs. set the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week, a record it held for five years. Vs. occupied the number one spot on the Billboard 200 for five weeks, the longest duration for a Pearl Jam album. The album has been certified seven times platinum by the RIAA in the United States.

Following the disbanding of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard’s previous group Mother Love Bone, the two recruited vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen to form Pearl Jam in 1990. Most of the songs began as instrumental jams, to which Vedder added lyrics about topics such as depression, homelessness, and abuse.
